Best large SUVs

The definitive ranking of the best and worst large SUVs on sale in the UK

This is the definitive ranking of the best and worst large SUVs on sale in the UK.

How can we make such a bold claim? Because this list isn’t just based on our opinion. We’ve compiled and analysed more than 15,000 new car reviews from 35 of the UK’s top motoring titles to produce our Expert Rating Index.

Why rely on one person’s opinion when you can have all of the top reviews gathered together in one place?

While the unstoppable rise in SUV sales has extended to large SUVs, this is one sector that has grown in a very different way to its smaller siblings. In addition to budget and mainstream models, there has been a huge rush from luxury car manufacturers to push out large and expensive SUVs to cash in on the craze.

Range Rover

The new benchmark in the luxury SUV class, the Range Rover has received plenty of praise for its refinement and wide array of abilities.

Range Rover Sport

The latest iteration of the Range Rover Sport is one of the most comfortable SUV options on or off the road, but it is certainly expensive.

Ferrari Purosangue

The Ferrari Purosangue is a luxurious V12 SUV/crossover model with enormous performance and a similarly enormous price tag.

Aston Martin DBX

The Aston Martin DBX has been praised for its handling and comfort, but criticised for a lack of practicality and interior technology.

Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender combines superb off-roading ability with interior luxuries, expensive tech and everyday practicality.

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 has received universally positive reviews from the UK motoring media and continues to receive awards year after year.

BMW X5

The BMW X5 currently holds a rating of 81% on our Expert Rating scale, which is a few points behind the class leaders but still competitive.

BMW iX

The BMW iX is a large all-electric SUV that is the most technologically advanced BMW to date, but its grandeur requires deep pockets.

Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery has received a broad range of media reviews, but has received consistent praise for its off-road ability.

Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 has received strong media reviews, with our Expert Rating putting it alongside the Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery.

Lamborghini Urus

The Lamborghini Urus has been praised for its performance, but criticised for its price and for not feeling extreme as might be expected.

BMW X7

The BMW X7 has received praise from UK reviewers for its driving dynamics and refinement, though its looks split opinion.

Peugeot 5008

The Peugeot 5008 has earned similar praise to the smaller 3008. Comfort and driving dynamics have both been praised, while Peugeot's i-Cockpit splits opinion.

Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X has been praised for its performance, styling and 'Falcon' wing doors, but it has been criticised for build quality compared to rivals.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan has received positive scores from the UK media, with praise for its comfort and quality but criticism for its poor cabin proportions.

Kia Sorento

The new Kia Sorento is a real step-up, with quality and space that sees Kia getting close to, though not quite challenging, premium rivals.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

You need deep pockets for a Mercedes-Benz G-Class but you will get an unprecedented combination of luxury and true go-anywhere ability.

Porsche Cayenne

In performance and quality the third-generation Porsche Cayenne still defines the premium SUV – just don’t buy a hybrid version.

Skoda Kodiaq

The Skoda Kodiaq has received consistently positive reviews in the UK media, with lower-spec models generally earning higher scores than more expensive models.

SEAT Tarraco

The SEAT Tarraco has received consistently good media reviews, with praise for its practicality, spaciousness and value for money.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

The Mercedes-Benz GLE has received generally good media reviews, although its overall Expert Rating score lags some way behind the class-leading Volvo XC90.

Bentley Bentayga

The Bentley Bentayga has received generally good media reviews, but it still lags well behind its principal rival, the Range Rover.

Mercedes-Benz GLS

The Mercedes-Benz GLS has received praise for its comfort, refinement and spaciousness, although the driving experience is not rated particularly highly.

Audi Q8 e-tron

The Audi Q8 e-tron has received positive media reviews, with praise for its smooth and quiet drivetrain, practicality and overall refinement.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe has received good to very good media reviews, and its overall Expert Rating is very competitive in the large SUV sector.

Volkswagen Touareg

The Volkswagen Touareg has received mixed reviews from the UK media, varying from average to very good with strongly contrasting opinions.

BMW X5 M

The BMW X5 M is a luxurious uprated SUV that offers thrilling pace and a lavish interior, but the regular X5 range offers more value-for-money.

BMW X6

The BMW X6 is a sporty-looking and surprisingly practical coupe-SUV but makes a polarising visual statement that not all appreciate.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is one of the most luxurious electric SUVs money can buy, but for some reviewers, it is rather uninvolving to drive.

Audi Q8

The Audi Q8 is a sporty version of the Q7 and the brand’s flagship SUV – it’s surprisingly practical but it also can be expensive.

Audi RS Q8

The Audi RS Q8 is a heavy-set SUV with sports car speed, but its price tag is just as eye-watering as its pace.

Toyota Highlander

The hybrid-powered Toyota Highlander is the brand’s biggest SUV with lots of space and equipment, but also lots of strong rivals.

Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail is a capable and quiet off-roader, but it is not the most economical, exciting or spacious option on the SUV market.

Maserati Levante

The Maserati Levante has received mixed scores from the UK motoring media, with more recent reviews rating the car more favourably than earlier reviews.

Genesis GV80

Reviewers largely agree that the Genesis GV80 is a capable alternative to premium SUV rivals, but poor ride comfort left many disappointed.

Ineos Grenadier

The Ineos Grenadier handles rugged terrain with aplomb, but its on-road performance leaves a lot to be desired.

BMW XM

The BMW XM may be the most powerful 'M' car ever sold, but if you value comfort, practicality and driver appeal, you should look elsewhere.

SsangYong Rexton

The SsangYong Rexton has received average scores from the UK media, with praise for its towing ability, off-road performance and value for money, but criticism for its comfort and interior quality.

Range Rover (2013 to 2021)

The Range Rover received glowing media reviews, with praise for its off-road ability, practicality and opulence. Reliability is awful, though.

Range Rover Sport (2013 to 2022)

The Range Rover Sport received positive media reviews, with praise for its driving dynamics but criticisms over quality and reliability.

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer (2015 to 2021)

A compact MPV with seven seats and a premium interior, the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer was a driver's delight – albeit an expensive one.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2014 to 2021)

An upmarket MPV praised for its practicality and cabin quality, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer was well regarded, though expensive.

BMW X5 (2014 to 2018)

The third-generation BMW X5 (on sale from 2014 to 2018) was as luxurious as it was imposing on the road, although it came with an expensive price tag.

Lexus RX (2015 to 2022)

The fourth-generation Lexus RX received praise for its build quality, comfort and refinement, but was criticised for its driving dynamics.

Nissan X-Trail (2014 to 2021)

The NIssan X-Trail received mixed reviews throughout its production life, being comfortable and practical but off the pace of its top rivals.

Toyota Land Cruiser (2018 to 2023)

The roomy Toyota Land Cruiser is a capable and reliable 4x4 that is built to last, but it is quite expensive to buy and run.

Mitsubishi Shogun Sport (2018 to 2021)

The Mitsubishi Shogun Sport has received generally poor media reviews and is currently the the lowest-rated car analysed by our Expert Ratings aggregator.

While the tumultuous rise in SUV sales has extended to large SUVs, this is one sector that has grown in a very different way to its smaller siblings. Some very long-serving mainstream models are still around in their latest forms, such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Nissan X-Trail, and they have been joined by a number of newcomers, typical examples being the Skoda Kodiaq, SEAT Tarraco and Volkswagen Touareg.

It’s upmarket where the most changes have happened, however. Brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have expanded their SUV line-ups to challenge traditional big hitters such as Jeep and Land Rover, while at the very top just about all of the luxury manufacturers have joined the market in recent years.

Once it would have been unthinkable to be able to buy SUVs wearing the badges of Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, Maserati, even Rolls-Royce, but today you can. All of these luxury SUVs are flagship models with price tags to match, and remarkably virtually all of them also boast qualities no longer found in most other SUVs – the ability to go seriously off road.

Electric offerings in this market are like the medium SUV sector, few and led by Tesla with its Model X, but expect this to change quickly, and to include some luxury models.
