Fiat 500 Electric

(2021 – present)

    Summary

The Fiat 500 Electric (also known as the 500e) is all-new model that will sit alongside and eventually replace the existing Fiat 500 – which has been around since 2007 (albeit with several updates over the years).

The new model is a bit bigger and, as the name suggests, will only be available with electric power. Like previous generations, it is available as both a regular hatchback and as a cabriolet. It landed in the UK in Spring 2021 and the old petrol model will soldier along for possibly a couple more years before being retired.

Media reviews to date have been strongly positive and, as of July 2023, the Fiat 500 Electric has an Expert Rating of 68%. It’s also one of the cheapest new electric cars on the market, although optional extras and higher trim levels can drive the prices up substantially.

Based on the reviews we have gathered to date, the new 500 Electric has been praised for its driving dynamics and interior quality, both of which are significant improvements over the old model. The main criticism is that the car remains cramped for four people and luggage, but then that goes for any car in this class. It’s also worth noting that most reviews have been based on high-spec models with much higher pricing that the lead-in version, with higher performance, more equipment and better battery range.

    Five stars

The Fiat 500 Electric was awarded a five-star eco rating from Green NCAP in July 2021.

Green NCAP said: “With no pollutant emissions at the tailpipe, this full-electric car gets an unbeatable ten out of ten for the Clean Air Index. Energy efficiency of battery electric cars is very high compared with other types of vehicles and the Fiat gets full points here, too.

“However, the standard charger supplied with the vehicle was slow and inefficient so, in the long term, the customer will pay more for grid electricity than would be the case with a better unit. In Green NCAP’s current assessment, which looks only at tailpipe emissions and takes no account of upstream CO2, the 500 completes its hat-trick with maximum points in the Greenhouse Gas pillar.”

The Fiat 500e offers very low-cost running, even by electric car standards. Electrical efficiency (the EV equivalent of miles per gallon for a petrol or diesel car) is excellent, while insurance and servicing should also be relatively cheap by new car standards.

The only disappointment is that battery range isn’t great. Across the 500e family, the average range is 170 miles, although the entry-level model drops down to as low as 115 miles while the biggest-battery models are rated for 199 miles. On top of that, you’ll need to bear in mind that these are official EU/UK lab figures, which are optimistic compared to real-world driving.
